$3,500 Goes to the “Veterans on the Move” Program of BTCS

The Gonzales Elks Lodge 2413 Exalted Ruler Terry Newton presented a check of $3,500 to members of the “Veterans on the Move” program of Bluebonnet Trails Community Services. The funding provided by the Elks National Foundation Community investment program will be used to purchase a trailer to store and transport bicycles purchased through a grant provided in 2017 by Gonzales Elks Lodge 2413.  Members of Veterans on the move and Elks Lodge members rode the bikes in the 2017 Come and Take it Parade and look forward to doing so again in the Come and Take it Parade of 2018.  Jaime Cervantes, Veterans Services Coordinator of Bluebonnet Trails Veterans services expressed gratitude to the Gonzales Elks Lodge 2413 members saying “Without the funding The Veterans on the move program would not be in existence.” The bicycles originally used in outings for veterans in Gonzales have been used in similar family based activities in Guadalupe and Bastrop Counties.  Teresa Chavez, also a Veterans Services Coordinator from Bluebonnet Trails Veterans services, relates her experiences with the Veterans on the Move program, “The donation of the funding for the bikes last year gave us a chance to involved veterans with their families in outings that are non-threatening and therapeutic for the whole family.”  The Lodge membership expressed a never ending support for our veterans in Gonzales and are proud that their efforts to serve veterans has expanded to other Counties.  The trailer will help store the bikes and make it easier to transport the bikes to the activity site.   Terry Newton invites new members to the Lodge who want to make a difference in the quality of life of the people of the community.

NAMI 12 Week Program for Family Members

NAMI Austin is offering a free 12-week program for family members of adults who have a mental health diagnosis. “Family-to-Family” classes will be held from 3-5:30 p.m. Sundays starting August 12 at Georgetown Health Foundation Community Rooms. The peer-led classes are designed to help family members understand and support their loved one living with a mental health diagnosis while maintaining their own well-being. You can learn more at namiaustin.org/family-to-family.

Because religion and spirituality often play a vital role in healing, families and individuals experiencing mental health issues often turn to a faith leader first for help. Faith leaders should be trained and equipped to handle these mental health concerns to the best of their ability. Bridges to Hope provides that training. The next workshop will be Saturday, August 4 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 at San Gabriel Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (1322E University Ave, Georgetown). Learn more at namiaustin.org/bridgestohope.
