(1856) Parent Educator

Job Description

The Parent Educator is responsible for providing services directly to families prenatally until their child turns 6 years old. This position will:

  • Provide parent/caregiver instruction and coaching in appropriate educational/child-development activities.
  • Coach parents/caregivers to increase positive parenting strategies as outlined in evidence-based curriculum (Parents as Teachers Foundational Curriculum).
  • Connect families to additional resources and services within the agency and community.
  • Conduct child health and developmental screenings, and refer to additional services based on screening results.
  • Plan and conduct parent group connection meetings to focus on child development and parenting information.
  • Collect and enter data in the Parents as Teachers database to meet timelines and requirements of Parents as Teachers National Center and program funders.
  • Collaborate with program staff to conduct outreach, host community events, and engage in program quality improvement activities.

All interactions with families and children use Trauma Informed Care principles and allow for parent choice and voice, allowing parents to engage their child so the child learns throughout the day in a variety of typical activities, and to support the attachment between the child and parent or primary caregiver.

Salary: $20.25 – $22.35/hr

CredentialsMinimum Qualifications: A high school diploma and at least 3 years’ experience working with families with young children (0-5 years old). Bilingual speaker of Spanish & English. Basic knowledge of child development and parental impact on development of a child. Well-developed interpersonal skills, time management/organization skills, and basic computer skills. Ability to work sensitively with families from a variety of cultural orientations. Must have valid Texas driver’s license and maintain approved driving status throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications: A college degree in early childhood education, child development, psychology, social work, health, or a related field. At least 5 years’ experience working with families with young children.
