The IDD Jail Diversion Coordinator is responsible for conducting crisis assessments and jail diversion activities within jails in Bluebonnet Trails Community Services’ catchment area. This position requires a good working relationship with jail personnel and County Courts, including County and District Attorneys, local center staff, and other community service organizations.  This position will follow protocols for identifying individuals who may be good candidates for diversion or referral for treatment while in the jail setting, particularly those with co-occurring mental health and intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD).  This position seeks to minimize jail time to coordinate appropriate health care services for persons incarcerated due to a mental health, intellectual, developmental or substance use condition.

This is a Monday through Friday position, primarily jail-based with flexible hours and some evening and weekend on-call hours required on a rotating basis. The position works in collaboration with the IDD Crisis Intervention Specialist to ensure continuity of care for persons who are incarcerated, identify treatment needs, and coordinate the plan of care once released from a correctional institution. This includes addressing housing needs and may involve initiating expedited applications for residential settings.

When notified a person with IDD is incarcerated, the IDD Jail Diversion Coordinator will document the date of the referral in the electronic health record.  Referrals may come from the BTCS service team, a magistrate’s order, jail personnel, or Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunication System (TLETS) electronic notification.  The position will then provide a Jail Screening within two business days of referral.

The person in this position must possess a passion and aptitude for working with individuals who have chronic and severe mental health, intellectual, developmental and/or substance use needs and are involved in the criminal justice system. Knowledge of psychotherapeutic medications, intensive case management functions, substance use treatment, crisis services, community resources, and evidence-based practices in the mental health and criminal justice systems is required. This position necessitates innovative thinking, patience, resiliency, skills in advocacy, service coordination, mental health assessment and evaluation, collaborative person-centered recovery planning and dual-diagnosis treatment. The person in this position will effectively work independently and on a team, prioritize needs during crisis situations, engage in regular meetings and training opportunities, and perform other duties as assigned with a positive attitude.
